30-year $250K Decades of Dollars win docks in Smyrna

Tuesday, March 20, 2012

ATLANTA – Vilmer Meyer of Austell selected the winning numbers in the March 8 Decades of Dollars drawing, winning $250,000 a year for 30 years.

Meyer, 61, is the second Decades of Dollars top prize winner in Georgia behind Dianne Reid of Evans, who won in the March 5 drawing. Numbers drawn for the March 8 drawing were: 2-9-12-25-26-42.

Meyer was awarded an oversized check Tuesday at L & S Food Mart Inc., located at 4495 S. Cobb Drive in Smyrna, the store where she purchased the Quik Pik.

The great-grandmother of two usually watches the televised drawing but fell asleep before watching her winning numbers being drawn.

She called the Georgia Lottery’s Player Information Hot Line the following day, discovering the good news.

“I hung up, called and called back a third time,” Meyer said. “It is a gift. I’m grateful, seriously.”

In addition to her great-grandchildren, Meyer has two adult children and four grandchildren. She has worked 36 years at a local hospital as a surgery scheduler.

Meyer said playing the Georgia Lottery is “making a donation to HOPE.”

“A lot of people don’t realize how good it is,” she said. “I enjoy (the lottery) and the excitement of it.”

She anticipates upgrading her living quarters and donating to charity.

Decades of Dollars is a multi-state game played in Georgia, Virginia, Kentucky and Arkansas.

The game offers a top prize of $250,000 a year for 30 years or a one-time cash option amount of $4 million. The game has a $10,000 second prize.

Decades of Dollars drawings are held at 11 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays. Tickets cost $2 per play.

As with all other Georgia Lottery games, proceeds from Decades of Dollars will benefit education in the state of Georgia.

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $13.1 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.4 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.1 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
